Game channels: game night lives in your server now

A new kind of channel where the game is the main thing. Join the voice to sit down at the table, or just drop in and watch, and keep chatting the whole time.

Game night used to mean a link in the chat, a room somewhere else and half the group asking where everyone went. Starting today, a community on mssgs can have a game channel: a voice channel where the game is the main thing. Hop into the voice and you are at the table. Everyone else in the channel pulls up a chair and watches, and the chat and the voice keep going the whole time.

A game channel in action: four friends in the voice play Mau, twelve more watch along, and the chat never stops.

The game is the main thing

Open a game channel and you land on the table, not on a wall of messages. It is still a voice channel at heart: drop in and talk, with everything voice channels already do. And it is a text channel too, so the jokes, the reactions and the trash talk sit right beside the game.

Join the voice to take a seat

  • In the voice means in the game. Whoever is in the channel’s voice can open the table or sit down at it. That is the whole sign-up.
  • One table per channel. Pick any of our ten games, from Four in a Row to Polymono, for two to four players depending on the game.
  • Stepping out for a snack? A dropped connection that comes back keeps its seat. Stay out of the voice for more than 15 seconds and the game carries on without you.

Everyone else gets a front-row seat

You do not have to play to join the fun. Everyone who can see the channel opens it straight onto the table as a spectator, sees every move as it happens and cheers in the chat. The channel shows how many people are watching, so the pressure is real. Want in? Join the voice and take a free seat.

Chat, talk, rematch

  • Talk while you play. The voice runs underneath the game, so you hear exactly how much someone regrets that +4.
  • The result lands in the chat. When a game ends with a winner, its result card is posted in the channel, for the bragging rights.
  • Rematch, same table. After a game the table stays open for the next one, until the last player leaves.

Starring: Mau

Mau is our own colour-matching card game, and it feels made for a game channel. Match the top card by colour or number, land a +2 or a Wild +4 on the next player, and say Mau! when you play down to your last card. Forget, and anyone can catch you: two cards for you. With a whole channel watching, nobody forgets twice.

Set one up in a minute

  1. Create a new channel in your community and make it a game channel. You need a role that may manage channels.
  2. Join its voice, open the table and pick a game.
  3. Friends join the voice to sit down. Everyone else in the community can watch.
Where can I play?

Game channels are in the desktop app, the web app and the iPhone app. Update your app to see them.
